1. Types of abuse
Domestic violence occurs in homes. It is a behavior that a person uses to gain power
and control over another person in a relationship. The most common forms of domestic
violence involved in child abuse as well as spousal or partner abuse are physical, emotional,
financial, and sexual abuse, and neglect
. Many times all are going on in the same relationship;
however, sometimes there may be one kind of abuse and not others.
1.1
Physical abuse
Physical abuse is any harm that a person does to another person's body. The abuser
knowingly uses force to cause pain.
Physical abuse may begin in a physically nonviolent way with neglect, which can
include failing to meet the victim's needs for physical intimacy. When abuse crosses the line
into overt violence, it may begin with relatively minor assaults such as painful pinching or
squeezing. Physical abuse includes hitting, bumping, pushing, pinching, slapping, punching,
squeezing, and shaking. It can include the use of objects, such as burning cigarettes on the skin.
As the abuse is repeated, however, it grows more violent and often becomes targeted—that is,
directed to a part of the body, such as the torso, where the injuries are less likely to show.
Many domestic abusers inflict (cause) pain in areas that are covered by clothing. They do this so
that the bruises are hidden and the abuse remains a secret.
Following is a typical pattern of ongoing, escalating physical abuse. The abuser:
Pinches, squeezes in a painful way. Pushes or shoves, jerks, pulls, or
shakes, slaps or bites.
Hits, punches, or kicks.
Chokes or throws objects at the victim.
Targets hits, kicks, and so on so that injuries do not show. Inflicts a sustained
series of hitting or kicking blows.
Abuse becomes bad enough to require some medical treatment.
Causes broken bones and/or internal injuries.
Causes miscarriage or injuries that require a therapeutic abortion.
Uses objects at hand, such as household utensils, as weapons. Denies the
victim medical treatment.
Neglect describes a failure to take care of another because of thoughtlessness or carelessness. Things that
everyone needs are food, water, shelter, clothing, and personal hygiene. A person who neglects another may not
be providing some or all of these things. Neglect can also be emotional. Abusers may avoid hugging, touching, or
saying kind words. Many who fail to properly care for their children or partners are under the influence of drugs or
alcohol, as the substance abuse changes their ideas of what is important.
