What is a genetically modified organism (GMO)? It can be said that it is an organism whose genetic material (DNA) has been changed by methods of modern biotechnology. This modern technology, also known as “genetic engineering”, implies the direct modification of DNA, the genetic material of a living organism. However, genetic engineering is an imprecise technology, so the insertion of foreign genes can stimulate the formation of unexpected proteins. The consequence may be the appearance of toxic effects or allergies in those who consume GMOs.
