Nouns

The popular definition of noun is that it ˝describes a person, place or thing. In fact we use nouns to express a range of additional meanings such as concepts, qualities, organisations, communities, sensations and events. Nouns convey a substantial proportion of the information in most texts.
Nouns can act:

  • as the subject of a verb, for example: Cats kill mice.
  • as the object of a verb, for example: Cats kill mice.
  • as the complement of a verb, for example: They are man.

They often end a phrase which begins with an article such as a(n), or a quantifier such as either, any, or many. They also often follow adjectives.

There are several different types of noun, as follows:

  • Proper nouns
  • Common nouns
  • Collective nouns
  • Compound nouns
  • Concrete Nouns
  • Abstract Nouns
  • Countable and Uncountable Nouns (Mass Nouns)

Proper nouns

Proper nouns (also called proper names) are the words which name specific people, organisations or places. They always start with a capital letter. It specializes or limits the thing to which it is applied, reducing it to a narrow application. City is a word applied to any one of its kind, but Chicago names one city, and fixes the attention upon that particular city. King may be applied to any ruler of a kingdom, but Alfred the Great is the name of one king only. This does not imply, however, that a proper name canbe applied to only one object, but that each time such a name is applied it is fixed or proper to that object. Even if there are severalBostons or Manchesters, the name of each is an individual or proper name.
